Clean-up at Bangladesh Market:
The eThekwini Municipality is currently taking measures to more effectively manage the build up of waste at the market site. This initiative has been undertaken in order to make the trading and shopping experience at Bangladesh Market a more pristine one. This move to make the market a cleaner environment will have a positive impact on the traders, customers, and the surrounding community.
The Municipality, together with DSW, has already started by providing new bins on the premises and to surrounding areas as well. They have also allocated cleaners from co-operating cleaning organizations to assist with the management of refuse. They have also introduced initiatives such as, workshops and training about effective management of the waste at the market site. This was done through DSW’s Education Wing.
The following activities have been planned to promote better waste management:
• Networking with other council departments • Assess and look into the potential of recycling for the traders • Recycling awareness education for the patrons • One on one liaising with the traders • Involving local youth organizations to participate in education activities • Dissemination of waste management information via an information table • Assessing the potential of waste management training
The aim of the above activities to create a waste aware citizenry and the potential for more vibrant Bangladesh market that will stand as an icon for a more environmentally conscious and progressive community.
